Million Mask March 2016: What, when and where is it and why is it happening?

Thousands of masked protesters are expected to descended on London this Saturday.
Clad in Guy Fawkes masks, supporters of the anarchic hacking collective Anonymous, will take to the streets in the Million Mask March.
The annual protest is one of many other protests that will take place cross the world on November 5 with anti-capitalism and pro-civil liberty agenda.
Police have warned "masked criminals seeking to run amok" during the march that they will be arrested if the protest turns violent.
Last year's march saw ugly scenes as missiles and fireworks were thrown at police, injuring four officers and six police horses.

More than 1,000 people are estimated to have taken part and there were more than 50 arrests.
However, protest organisers Million Mask March London appeared to be putting on a defiant front, posting on their Facebook page that "the police are not your friends".Almost 20,000 people have said on Facebook that they will attend the event.

What is it?

The march covers more than 400 cities across the globe, bringing together people against austerity, mass surveillance and corrupt politicians.
Protesters don Guy Fawkes masks in a nod to the most famous member of the Gunpowder Plot who made a failed attempt to blow up the House of Lords on November 5, 1605.

The mask became a signature look for Anonymous and other anarchist groups after it was worn by the revolutionary protagonist of Alan Moore's V for Vendetta comic book.
It became common on online message boards, including 4chan, the forum where Anonymous seems to have sprung up.By 2008, Anonymous supporters were wearing the mask in protests against the Church of Scientology.
London has always attracted one of the largest crowds for the Million Mask March since its inception in 2012.

The anarchic ‘hacktivist’ network is linked with cyber-attacks against governments, including US and Israel

On the Million Mask March London Facebook page, it explains: "This movement is not about jealousy and hate.
"It is about making the world a better place, a more fair place for us all. There are those that use their wealth for good, they are not our target.


"It is the people that use their wealth for evil, the warmongers, the slumlords, the polluters, the abusers, the corrupt politicians, that we would see brought to justice.
"That is all we ask, we work together towards a common goal, justice. We ask the government to cleanse themselves of corruption and do what is right for the 99%."

Where and when is it taking place?

London's protest kicks off in Trafalgar Square on Saturday, November 5.
The group will then move off when numbers are high, at around 7pm to 8pm.

Who is Anonymous?

The anarchic ‘hacktivist’ network is linked with cyber-attacks against governments, including US and Israel .
It has also targeted multi-national corporations such as PayPal and Visa, child porn websites, the British National Party and the Church of Scientology.
The movement is also closely identified with the Occupy protests, Wikileaks, and the Arab Spring.
